January in Mr O Sullivan's 3rd Class
January Monthly Update — Rang 3 (Mr O’Sullivan)
We were delighted to welcome the children back after the Christmas break and had a very busy and productive month in Rang 3. The class settled quickly back into routines and showed great enthusiasm across all areas of learning.
English. This month, our English work focused on developing comprehension, vocabulary, fluency and writing skills through our class novel. Pupils practised using dictionaries to explore new words and worked on summarising and retelling events in their own words. There was a strong emphasis on reading with expression and giving constructive feedback to peers during paired reading.
In writing, the children explored different genres including diary entries and character reviews, applying their understanding of structure and voice. They also continued to develop their spelling through differentiated groups and worked on improving handwriting presentation using cursive script.
Gaeilge. Our theme for January was An Aimsir. Pupils built their weather vocabulary and practised describing the weather in both the present and past tense. They engaged in games, poems, and oral activities to support their learning and confidence.
Later in the month, we explored hobbies and interests, with pupils asking and answering questions about what they like to do. The children enjoyed expressing their opinions about stories and writing simple sentences about their own interests.
Maths. In Maths, we explored fractions and decimals, learning to identify halves, quarters and equivalent fractions, as well as relating decimals to real-life contexts such as money and measurement.
Later in the month, we focused on money, where pupils practised recognising coins and notes, calculating totals, working out change and solving practical problems through role-play activities such as running a class shop.
STEM. In Science, we learned about environmental awareness, discussing sources of air pollution and how pollution affects people, animals and plants. Pupils identified different types of pollution and explored ways to care for our environment.
Digital Technology was integrated through research and report writing, as well as developing PowerPoint skills such as adding slides, images and changing fonts.
History & Geography We had great fun learning about The Vikings, researching their lives and presenting group projects. Pupils also learned about cardinal directions, using compasses and creating treasure maps to apply their learning in a creative way.
Arts Education. In Visual Arts, pupils created Viking longships, treasure maps and later completed beautiful portraits for Grandparents’ Day. Drama activities were integrated with Gaeilge stories, allowing pupils to explore characters and express ideas creatively.
Grandparent's Day
We had a wonderful celebration for Grandparents’ Day, where the children sang a song and recited a poem for their grandparents and special guests. They enjoyed inviting them to the classroom to share their fantastic work, and all of Third Class were very happy and grateful to see everyone.
