Green school day of action & planting
Congratulations to the entire school community - students, parents and staff on the very successful Green Schools Day of Action held on March 7th! It was lovely to see all the children walking and wheeling into the school. After Easter we will continue to have our “Walk or Wheel on Wednesday” to reduce the amount of traffic in the school grounds and thus improve the air quality of the school environment.
In addition we decided to mark the occasion with planting activities to improve biodiversity, air quality and well being on the school site. We will enjoy seeing the hedge and the trees grow. Check out the smiling faces below.

We were delighted to reach our goal of 25km which was the gold distance for the Spring Walking Challenge organised by Cork Sports Partnership. We really enjoyed our class jogs and walks over the seven weeks, while it was great for wellbeing also! Well done to all pupils who each received a certificate of achievement for the steps challenge!

GLOBE Ireland clean air action plan primary school winners
We were thrilled to hear the news that we were joint Winners in the Primary School Section of the GLOBE Ireland Clean Air Programme! We were awarded Best Clean Air Action Plan in the Primary School Section!
We are displaying our banner proudly in front of our school! We presented our project at the online Air Quality Student Conference for Primary and Secondary Schools in January. We are now beginning work on putting our action plan into place! |
We are presenting at our Parents Association meeting on February 20th to launch our Anti-Idling Campaign and to seek support on an upcoming planting initiative (Thursday March 7th) at our school which will further support our clean air action plan. The current 6th class pupils were also fortunate to be selected as CARO (Climate Action Regional Offices) fund recipients for Best Climate-Resilient School Grounds Development Plan last year. Therefore, the upcoming initiatives and campaign that we are seeking your support as parents on will be a culmination of two years work by our 5th and 6th class pupils.

science week 2023
DESIGN A PROSTHESIS
For Science Week we set ourselves the task of designing and making a prosthesis for our toys. We thoroughly enjoyed this task - it was challenging and funny in equal measure! 😁 The feedback was unanimous, everybody had great fun doing it.
We had to assess ourselves using the following criteria:
1. Does the prosthesis fit?
2. Do you think it feels comfortable for your toy?
3. Does it improve mobility (movement) for the user (toy)?
4. Is it suitable e.g. is it balanced?
Take a look at our designs below...

Science week assembly presentation
Congratulations to Ellie who did a wonderful presentation to the 3rd - 6th classes at Senior Assembly on Diabetes. The theme for Science Week 2023 was "Human" - we explored how technology and medical science has impacted on human life. We designed protheses in class and Ellie presented on how technology has helped in her life. It was a very personal, informative and interactive presentation with lots of questions that Ellie fielded so well. We all enjoyed listening and learned so much. Well done Ellie!!! 👏👏👏
Oíche shamhna Shona DAoibh!
We had great fun dressing up for Halloween. We made cards for our buddies and they visited us while touring the Halloween doors around the school for the competition organised by the Student Council.
Autumnal Art
We created leaf trays with the leaves we collected on our autumn walk. We made hedgehogs from clay with our buddies and added those also. See below...
space week 2023
During Space Week in 5th class we learned about Planet Earth in Space! We researched our solar system, learned the positions of the planets and facts about each. We created a 3D model of our solar system from papier mache. It was a messy but enjoyable process!
Working as Archaeologists
While working with Ms. Creedon, Mr. O'Sullivan's 5th class were figuring out how to work as archaeologists. Working as an archaeologist takes percision, care and patience. We were tasked with trying to 'excavate' out or remove the chocolate chips from cookies. It was harder than you think!! Thankfully we were given another cookie at the end to enjoy for ourselves!!
Great excitement to meet our buddies!
The fifth classes had a busy day on Friday... We met our Junior Infant buddies for the first time, made rockets and even planted a Hazel Tree which we received for National Tree Day 'Lá na gCrann' on Thursday October 5th. This year’s theme was ‘Nuts about Nature’ – ‘Fiáin chun Dúlra’ and the native Hazel tree – was the tree chosen this year. This tree is very common in Ireland and the hazelnuts are ripe by August. There may be a few left on the Hazel trees near you so keep an eye out!
Hazel trees support lots of other living things besides squirrels. Lichens grow on the bark and branches and 140 species of lichens have been counted growing on Irish hazel trees. Insects love the tree too – 73 different species were recorded on Hazel trees. It is a really good tree for biodiversity. Therefore, we were delighted to attend the planting of this Hazel tree with our Junior Infant buddies who will monitor and watch it grow over their eight years at the school.

OUR autumn walk
We went on an autumn walk and collected leaves and objects of interest to us. We identified the names, leaves and fruits of five common trees on our walk. We made trays from clay using imprints from leaves we collected. Check out our beautiful autumn leave trays below which are ready for painting.
some of our october displays!
a very busy start to 5th class!
We are enjoying our gymnastic lessons and getting outdoors for the last of the summer sunshine.
globe air quality campaign 2023
In October of last year, we completed the GLOBE Clean Air Survey at our school. The experiment measured Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) levels at three different locations (Sheltered, Car Park and Near Main Road) on our school grounds. Nitrogen Dioxide is an air pollutant mainly associated with traffic.
This year we are again participating in the campaign to measure pollution levels in the air around our school. We had to place the test tubes in two different locations on our school grounds and provide samples for analysis. The tubes will be in place for four weeks and we will take them down on October 24th. We are looking forward to receiving feedback on our experiment and comparing the results to 2022 to see if the air quality is improving on our school grounds. 🤞 In addition this year, we are also required to conduct two traffic counts and weather observations each week! So if you see us out and about in the mornings with our clipboards, it is to collect data to help analyse and improve air quality at our school! 😁

After a month of monitoring the test tubes, completing traffic counts and recording weather observations, it was time to take our test tubes down on October 24th. We returned them promptly and are looking forward to receiving the results soon.
school garden
We had a lot of work to do tending to the school garden after summer. We had to harvest carrots, purple corn, onions, herbs and even a few stray potatoes that escaped us in June. 😁 Our pumpkins are still doing great! We look forward to working on the garden in the year ahead!
