Treehouse Carol service comes to scoil bhríde
Many thanks to the children from the Treehouse Playschool here in Rathcormac who entertained us with a beautiful Christmas Carol Service on the school yard. It was so lovely for the whole school to be able to attend and it was a very enjoyable and festive occasion for all. Thanks so much to the children, teachers, parents and guardians who attended. 😁
A very special week at scoil bhríde...
After 34 years of wonderful and dedicated service to the Scoil Bhríde community, Mrs. Howard is heading on retirement and to pastures new!
On behalf of the staff of Scoil Bhríde, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Howard for her incredible 34 years of service. Her dedication as both a teacher and principal has been truly inspiring, and she has played a key role in shaping this school into the wonderful place it is today. Mrs. Howard’s leadership was defined by her genuine care for each student, always knowing their strengths, challenges, and hopes. She wasn’t just focused on academic success—she wanted every child to leave here feeling supported and confident.
This week’s celebration has been our way of saying thank for all you have done for us over the years. We began marking this very special occasion as a whole school by inviting Mrs. Howard to plant a White Cherry tree at the front of our school, near the garden.
Mrs. Howard has undertaken many planting projects over her career at Scoil Bhríde, but never one in her own name and honour!
We will always think of Mrs. Howard and be reminded of the incredible accomplishments she achieved for our school over her very successful career as múinteoir agus príomhoide.
Ba mhaith linn buíochas ó chroí a ghabháil le Mrs. Howard de gach rud!

GLOBE Air quality campaign 2024
Sixth Class have just kicked off the annual GLOBE Air Quality Campaign! We have completed the GLOBE Air Quality Survey over the past two years at our school. The experiment measures Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) levels at three different locations (Sheltered, Car Park and Near Main Road) on our school grounds. Nitrogen Dioxide is an air pollutant mainly associated with traffic.
This year we are again participating in the campaign to measure pollution levels in the air around our school. We had to place the test tubes at three different locations on our school grounds and will provide samples for analysis. The tubes will be in place for four weeks and we will take them down on October 23rd. We are looking forward to receiving feedback on our experiment and comparing the results to 2022 and 2023 to see if the air quality around our school is improving. 🤞 In addition this year, we are also required to conduct two traffic counts and weather observations each week! So if you see us out and about in the mornings with our clipboards, it is to collect data to help analyse and improve air quality at our school! 😁

The day kicked off with Wake Up Shake Up which was led by the Student's Council and continued with stations across the school and in the community field. Glorious sunshine, delicious cake and disco dancing with DJ Bertie... it must be the GREEN SCHOOLS PARTY!
We couldn't have wished for better weather to celebrate raising our SEVENTH GREEN SCHOOL FLAG! The day got off to a fantastic start with Mrs. Howard raising our seventh green flag! The Green Schools Committee asked Mrs. Howard to raise the flag as Mrs. Howard has given 34 years of dedicated service to our school community and it is thanks to her that the Green Schools programme began in Scoil Bhríde almost 15 years ago. Following this the entire school enjoyed ice cream thanks to the Parents Association whilst basking in the glorious sunshine. There was also delicious cake for all the students to sample which was baked by our S.N.A. Helen McGrath. We rounded off this fantastic celebration with a disco with DJ Bertie! We were so impressed by the dance moves, energy, enthusiasm (and screaming 😁) of the students at Scoil Bhríde! It was a whole school community effort to create this very special occasion with everyone contributing and playing their part. The children will have wonderful memories to treasure forever more from what might be their first or last Green School Party.
Huge thanks and congratulations to Ms. Murphy and the Green Schools Committee for planning and organising this amazing celebration! Comhghairdeas libh go léir! 👏👏👏

GREEN SCHOOL DAY OF ACTION SUCCESS!
Congratulations to the entire school community - students, parents and staff on the very successful Green Schools Day of Action held on March 7th! Only 4 cars came through the gates for morning drop off (a reduction of 60 cars). It was lovely to see all the children walking and wheeling into the school. After Easter we will continue to have our “Walk or Wheel on Wednesday”. The aim is to reduce the amount of traffic in the school grounds and thus improve the air quality of the school environment. Walking or wheeling also contributes to the children's overall well being. Thank you to our Green School Committee and Ms. Murphy for coordinating the Green School Initiatives in Scoil Bhríde.
In addition we decided to mark the occasion with planting activities to improve biodiversity, air quality and well being on the school site. Special thanks to all the parents who came to help out with the planting of the hedge and trees. Thanks also to Goran and Ivana from Cork Landscaping for their services and to Ms. Hogan for coordinating this project. Pupils will enjoy seeing the hedge and the trees grow. Check out the smiling faces below. 😁

Celebrating GRANDPARENTS DAY 2024
The stage was set to mark the wonderful occasion of Grandparents Day at Scoil Bhríde. We were delighted to once again welcome the grandparents and special people of the children from third class.
The children recited a beautiful poem about their grandparents and performed Count On Me. Afterwards everyone enjoyed a chat over a cup of tea and took the opportunity to take pictures at the photo booth. The children were also excited to show their classrooms, where they learn everyday, to their grandparents and special people. You can see a quick peek of the celebration below in case you missed it.

tREE PLANTING FOR NATIONAL TREE DAY
There was great excitement at Scoil Bhríde on Friday amongst the Junior Infants and Fifth Classes... We met our buddies for the first time and we even planted a Hazel Tree together which we received for National Tree Day 'Lá na gCrann' on Thursday October 5th. This year’s theme was ‘Nuts about Nature’ – ‘Fiáin chun Dúlra’ and the native Hazel tree – was the tree chosen this year. This tree is very common in Ireland and the hazelnuts are ripe by August. There may be a few left on the Hazel trees near you, so keep an eye out!
Hazel trees support lots of other living things besides squirrels and field mice. Lichens grow on the bark and branches and 140 species of lichens have been counted growing on Irish hazel trees. Insects love the tree too – 73 different species were recorded on Hazel trees. It is a really good tree for biodiversity. Therefore, fifth class were delighted to attend the planting of this Hazel tree with their junior infant buddies who will monitor it and watch it grow over their eight years at Scoil Bhríde!
