tREE PLANTING FOR NATIONAL TREE DAY
There was great excitement at Scoil Bhríde on Friday amongst the Junior Infants and Fifth Classes... We met our buddies for the first time and we even planted a Hazel Tree together which we received for National Tree Day 'Lá na gCrann' on Thursday October 5th. This year’s theme was ‘Nuts about Nature’ – ‘Fiáin chun Dúlra’ and the native Hazel tree – was the tree chosen this year. This tree is very common in Ireland and the hazelnuts are ripe by August. There may be a few left on the Hazel trees near you, so keep an eye out!
Hazel trees support lots of other living things besides squirrels and field mice. Lichens grow on the bark and branches and 140 species of lichens have been counted growing on Irish hazel trees. Insects love the tree too – 73 different species were recorded on Hazel trees. It is a really good tree for biodiversity. Therefore, fifth class were delighted to attend the planting of this Hazel tree with their junior infant buddies who will monitor it and watch it grow over their eight years at Scoil Bhríde!
globe air quality campaign 2023
In October of last year, we completed the GLOBE Clean Air Survey at our school. The experiment measured Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) levels at three different locations (Sheltered, Car Park and Near Main Road) on our school grounds. Nitrogen Dioxide is an air pollutant mainly associated with traffic.
This year we are again participating in the campaign to measure pollution levels in the air around our school. We had to place the test tubes in two different locations on our school grounds and provide samples for analysis. The tubes will be in place for four weeks and we will take them down on October 24th. We are looking forward to receiving feedback on our experiment and comparing the results to 2022 to see if the air quality is improving on our school grounds. 🤞 In addition this year, we are also required to conduct two traffic counts and weather observations each week! So if you see us out and about in the mornings with our clipboards, it is to collect data to help analyse and improve air quality at our school! 😁

5th & 6th Class tour to emerald park
We had a very enjoyable school tour to Emerald Park (or as some of us will always call it Tayto Park). 😉 We departed at the crack of dawn, just after 6.30am and arrived in plenty of time just before 10am. Many of the children headed straight for The Cú Chulainn! We took in a tour of the zoo also and asked lots of questions before returning to the thrilling rides. Many of us got soaked on The Viking Voyage but soon dried off in the wonderful sunshine. 😎
There was great excitement in the air at Scoil Bhríde as the Junior and Senior Infant Classes headed off on their school tour to Leahy's Farm! The weather was ideal and the buses were filled with happy smiling faces. There was great excitement before departure, as you can see from the photos below!

BARNARDOS ONLINE SAFETY PARENT WORKSHOP
In Scoil Bhríde we have noticed that children are using social media and online platforms from a very young age. Every year, issues regarding the incorrect use of these online platforms and social media can create difficulties. Teaching children about online safety is of vital importance and is an essential part of their learning in Scoil Bhríde. We have liaised with Barnardos with a view to providing specific training for the children in 3rd-6th Classes. Barnardos offer ‘Online Safety’ workshops for pupils and we have booked this workshop for these pupils. It teaches children to be aware of how to be safe and resilient online.
We feel that it is vital that parents have access to support and training also. A Barnardos trainer, Claire O'Mahony will deliver an in-person Parents’ session in the hall in Scoil Bhríde on Tuesday, May 23rd at 7.30pm. We ask that at least one parent/guardian from each family in the school would attend on the night. Please make a very special effort to attend this seminar which will help you to support your child with regard to online safety.
Below you will find the registration link for the in-person Parents’ session. Please click this link to confirm your attendance on the night.
Thank you to all who attended the Parent Workshop. Here is the presentation and relevant information from the night.

SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE AGUS LÁ GLAS AR SCOIL BHRÍDE
Bíonn a lán gníomhaíochtaí ar siúl timpeall Scoil Bhríde le coicís anois le haghaidh Seachtain na Gaeilge 1ú - 17ú Márta 2023. Bíonn frása an lae, Gaelgóir an lae, cluíchí cosúil le biongó agus ar an Déardoin, bhí tionól mhór sa halla. Bhíomar go léir ag cleachtadh amhráin agus dánta don tionól. Bhí taispéantas iontach sa halla ar Lá Glas. Féach thíos.

LÁ GLAS IN AID OF REBEL WHEELERS
Our Lá Glas donation went to a charity very close to our hearts this year, Rebel Wheelers. This charity works to empower children with a physical disability by introducing them to sports in a fun and safe environment. One of our students Rían Somers is involved with the charity and his dad Fergal came into our assemblies to tell us more about the work they do. We even watched a video of Rían scoring his first basket against Kerry! Rebels Abú! 😁

stem academy
Our two 4th classes are taking part in STEM lessons on Wind Energy as part of the Johnson and Johnson Schools programme. Each Wednesday they participate over an interactive Zoom and are learning all about wind energy and will be making windmills over the coming weeks. We are all looking forward to seeing how they turn out.
4th class have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to work as part of the STEM DePuy (Johnson & Johnson) school programme over the past few weeks. The children learned about renewable energy and the many ways using renewable energy sources can help the environment. During the programme, members of the team visited the school and the children made their own house and attached a wind turbine to it in order to generate electricity to light up the houses.
The highlight of the programme was our visit to the site to see a real wind turbine and take part in STEM activities with the staff. It was an amazing learning experience and a great beginning to Engineers Week in our school, inspiring many of the children to consider a career in engineering in the future!

The halla was filled with colour and creativity at Scoil Bhríde for a very special assembly to mark World Book Day 2023. Mrs. Howard read The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt to the whole school! There were crayons of all different colours scattered around the school...
The week has been filled with fun activities to continue to inspire and encourage a love of reading among the children...
After a week of searching and following clues across the school, Mrs. Howard finally found Wally!

We also took part in One School, One Book and all the classes read The Vanishing Lake by Paddy Donnelly. He is an Irish author living in Belgium and we really enjoyed his magical story influenced by Loughareema (The Vanishing Lake) in Ballycastle near where he grew up.
As a school, we recommend this book! 👍 |
We loved dressing up as our favourite characters and sharing our favourite books with our friends and buddies at school. Some of us were even inspired by our fellow school mates! Check out our fabulous costumes below.
BAKE SALE A fantastic success

5th and 6th class hosted a Cake Sale Tuesday, February 21st in aid of the victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
All proceeds will be donated to the Irish Emergency Alliance.
important changes to our attendance policy
We have recently reviewed our attendance policy. Like all other schools nationally attendance decreased significantly during the Covid 19 Pandemic due to illness and the national health and safety requirements around self-isolation and restricting movement. There was also quite a lot of illness just before Christmas but thankfully since we returned in January our attendance levels have improved again. While the school will continue to be guided by Public Health advice and guidelines, parents/guardians are encouraged to limit pupil absences as much as possible. Regular school attendance is a critical factor in your child’s emotional, social and educational development. "Every day counts!" (Tusla)
Attendance and punctuality levels are recorded electronically on Aladdin daily by class teacher/secretary and any concern regarding an individual’s attendance/punctuality is reported to the Principal/Deputy. Following our review, I just wish to highlight the following change in the way we record attendance/absence. Roll call will take place at 10.20 a.m. each morning for all classes. Pupils who are not present for the Roll Call at 10.20 a.m. will be marked absent (Rules for National Schools). If a pupil arrives after roll call, they will be marked absent but the time of arrival is still recorded on Aladdin.

IRISH SIGN LANGUAGE
Ms. Feeney's second class presented what they are learning about Irish Sign Language at assembly. Classes from 1st - 4th are being taught sign language by Eimear, an Irish Sign Language Tutor. They are learning the alphabet and signs for some words. Ms. Feeney's class also did their own research about sign language and created posters to hang around the school to encourage everyone to use sign.

For more photos from Grandparents Day, check out Ms. Hynes' & Ms. Lynch's Third Class Webpages.
The stage was set to mark the wonderful occasion of Grandparents Day at Scoil Bhríde. After missing out for the past few years, we were delighted to once again welcome the grandparents and special people of the children from third class.
The children recited a beautiful poem about their grandparents and performed Count On Me. Afterwards everyone enjoyed a chat over a cup of tea and took the opportunity to take pictures at the photo booth. The children were also excited to show their classrooms, where they learn everyday, to their grandparents and special people. You can see a quick peek of the celebration below in case you missed it.

catholic schools week & Grandparents day 2023
The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2023 is "Walking Together in Faith and Love." The daily themes are outlined in the poster below.
Grandparents Day takes place on Wednesday January 25th. All the classes will be completing special activities this week to share with their grandparents/special person. |
Due to the large number of pupils at our school it is no longer possible to invite all the grandparents to visit the school on Grandparents Day. Therefore, this year we hope to start a new special tradition at our school.
Grandparents of the 3rd class pupils are invited to visit our school on Wednesday Jan. 25th for Grandparents Day. We look forward to welcoming them to our school at 1.30pm for a visit to the 3rd class classrooms, as well as a short performance by the 3rd class children and some light refreshments. We hope to make this a special event and new tradition for the grandparents of all the children when they reach 3rd class going forward. |
