WE GOT OUR Seventh GREEN FLAG!
Glorious sunshine, delicious cake and disco dancing with DJ Bertie... it must be the GREEN SCHOOLS PARTY!
We couldn't have wished for better weather to celebrate raising our SEVENTH GREEN SCHOOL FLAG! The day got off to a fantastic start with Mrs. Howard raising our seventh green flag! The Green Schools Committee asked Mrs. Howard to raise the flag as Mrs. Howard has given 34 years of dedicated service to our school community and it is thanks to her that the Green Schools programme began in Scoil Bhríde almost 15 years ago. Following this the entire school enjoyed ice cream thanks to the Parents Association whilst basking in the glorious sunshine. There was also delicious cake for all the students to sample which was baked by our S.N.A. Helen McGrath. We rounded off this fantastic celebration with a disco with DJ Bertie! We were so impressed by the dance moves, energy, enthusiasm (and screaming 😁) of the students at Scoil Bhríde! It was a whole school community effort to create this very special occasion with everyone contributing and playing their part. The children will have wonderful memories to treasure forever more from what might be their first or last Green School Party.
Huge thanks and congratulations to Ms. Murphy and the Green Schools Committee for planning and organising this amazing celebration! Comhghairdeas libh go léir! 👏👏👏

WE DID IT!
WE GOT OUR SIXTH GREEN FLAG: GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP - LITTER & WASTE!
WE GOT OUR SIXTH GREEN FLAG: GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP - LITTER & WASTE!
Following a lot of hard work and making sustainable changes to how we do things at school and home, we were delighted to be awarded our sixth green flag which is 'Global Citizenship - Litter and Waste'. We focused on monitoring litter and waste, the correct separation of waste in our class bins in particular and also on global citizenship and the Sustainable Development Goals. We completed a school project on Kenya in 4th - 6th classes to raise awareness on life in a developing country. Our energy and water monitors continue to work hard to ensure lights are switched off when leaving the classroom, to ensure taps aren't left running and that any leaks/faulty taps are reported (amongst other duties). We are still encouraging everyone to travel to school in a sustainable way whenever possible and our school garden is beginning to flourish!
We can not wait to celebrate this wonderful achievement and plans are well underway for our big party!!! 🥳

Glorious sunshine, teddy bear picnics, delicious cake and disco dancing... It must be the GREEN SCHOOLS PARTY!
We couldn't have wished for better weather to celebrate raising our SIXTH GREEN SCHOOL FLAG - GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP - LITTER AND WASTE. The day got off to a fantastic start with Sheila Mulcahy raising our sixth green flag on behalf of the cleaning staff at our school who work tirelessly to keep our environment litter free! Following this the entire school enjoyed a teddy bear picnic, basking in the glorious sunshine. It was an extra special picnic for the children in Junior and Senior Infants who got to share it with their buddies in 5th and 6th classes. There was also delicious cake for all the students to sample which was baked by our S.N.A. Helen McGrath. Following this, the children struck a pose with their friends in the Green Schools photo frame which was kindly designed by Liam Barry. We rounded off this fantastic celebration with a disco with DJ Bertie! We were so impressed by the dance moves, energy, enthusiasm (and screaming 😁) of the students at Scoil Bhríde despite the afternoon heat! It was a whole school community effort to create this very special occasion with everyone contributing and playing their part. The children will have wonderful memories to treasure forever more from what might be their first or last Green School Party.

Day of Action
On Thursday 7th April we held our Day of Action for the Green Schools theme we are currently working on: Global Citizenship, Litter and Waste. Everyone dressed in green and during the day we had special Green Schools assembles where pupils shared information about their projects on Kenya (Senior Assembly) and some pupils from Senior Infants and 1st Class taught us how to speak some Croatian, Polish and Spanish (Junior Assembly). Both 3rd Classes organised a litter pick of the local area for our Day of Action. There was also a fantastic effort made to travel to school in a sustainable way. On Tuesday 5th April we counted 103 cars coming through the school gates but on our Day of Action we only counted 38 cars, a reduction of 65! This was a brilliant reduction in such a short space of time. Well done everyone!
To celebrate our Day of Action the homework for the day was to spend some time outside in nature - this was the highlight of the day for many of the boys and girls! We hope you enjoy seeing some photos of our Day of Action below.

'BIG TRAVEL CHALLENGE'
'BIG TRAVEL CHALLENGE'
We achieved our goal!!! Well done to each and every one of you for coming to school in a sustainable way! 45% of us now walk to school!
Hopefully by Wednesday, 2nd of March we will notice a difference in numbers. Please see our progress below!
|
Following a recent survey of the transport methods children are using to get to school, we have noticed that 39.6% of children are coming by car. As a result, we have chosen to focus on the sustainable method of ‘Walking’ to school as part of our work towards our sixth Green Flag.
A Green Schools ‘10 Day Challenge’ will take place between Monday, 14th of February and Wednesday, 2nd of March where we will be encouraging children to walk to school or park ‘n’ stride where possible. Our aim is to decrease the number of cars coming to school and increase the number of walkers, in particular. |
Check out the rap we created below to help encourage everyone in our school to walk to school.
Here are some of the things we have been doing to maintain our work on previous themes of the Green Schools programme.

We hope you enjoy seeing some of the work we have been doing to ensure Scoil Bhríde remains a Green School.

WATER SAVING CHARACTERS
Our water saving characters were designed by Tara Buckley. Their names are Splish and Splash and they collect rainwater to reuse. In our school we harvest rainwater for our toilets. You can see that they make a heart shape with their hands around the world. This reminds us we should care for and respect our planet.
WATER SAVING CODE
Naoise Mc Carthy created our Water Saving Code. Our code is displayed in every classroom to remind us to save water. Our code is: Save water one step at a time before you create a water wasting crime!
WATER SAVING TIPS
1. Take a shower instead of a bath.
2. Turn the tap off when you are brushing your teeth.
3. Don’t overfill the kettle.
4. Only use the washing machine when you have a full load.
5. Only use the dishwasher when it’s full.
6. When washing dishes put the stopper in the sink instead of leaving the tap running while you clean.
7. Use a basin to rinse/clean your fruit and vegetables.
8. When getting a drink of water don’t leave the tap running until the water goes cold. Keep a jug of water in the fridge instead to avoid wasting water.
9. Collect rainwater for watering plants and flowers.
10. Water your garden at the coolest time of the day.
11. Use a bucket of water and a sponge instead of a hose when washing the car.
12. If you have a faulty tap get it fixed as soon as possible.
