world book day
In 6th class we celebrated World Book Day with a variety of activities. We participated in One School One Book - After the Fall by Dan Santat, enjoyed reading with our buddies in Senior Infants who brought in their favourite books, and completed the Where's Wally and Crack the Code activities across the school organised by the Student Council. Check out the fun we had in the pictures below.
waking up the school garden!
We began work on reawakening the garden and bringing it back to life after a LONG sleepy winter! We are decorating our signs, weeding, watering and monitoring for delicate shoots which we will protect and guide to growth. To date we have planted potatoes, onions and peas with lots of help and guidance from our caretaker Colin. We are also busy indoors tending to cucumbers, radishes and swedes which we will soon sow for the autumn. Check out our hard work below.
Playing outside with our little buddies!
February art
We were inspired by many different areas of our studies for February art. We started off the month by weaving St. Brigid's crosses from pipe cleaners. We also explored one point perspective drawings (2D / 3D shape in Maths). Finally, we concluded our WW2 studies and class novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by recreating city skyline images during Blitzkreig or "Lightning War" used by Germany in WW2.
GLOBE Ireland online zoom presentation
Congratulations to the 6th class pupils who presented our project at the online GLOBE Air Quality Student Conference for Primary and Secondary Schools on January 28th. The standard of the presentation from Scoil Bhríde Rathcormac was very high and remarked upon by the experts Professor John Wenger (UCC) and Professor Jurgita Ovadnevaite (University of Galway). We were all very proud of Grace, Ailbhe, Ava, Matthew, Cara and Conor who presented so well despite feeling nervous about the occasion. The experience of being part of and presenting on this project will stand to you!
We are now beginning work on putting our Anti-Idling Campaign 2025 action plan into place!

WINTER BUDDY WALK
We went on a walk to explore and find signs of winter with our buddies in Senior Infants.
it's beginning to look a lot like christmas... 🎄
We were busy decorating the classroom in preparation for Christmas this week. The youngest member of our class placed the star on top of the tree and we pulled out of the hat for official switching on of the lights duty! 😁
Another Jigsaw completed under our December wellbeing 'Keep learning' theme

thanks to our PA & Parents for a very festive reindeer run!
Thanks to our Parent's Association for organising our very festive Reindeer Run!
Thanks also to all the parents who came out and lined the streets and community field, honked their horns and blasted out the festive music! It created a wonderful atmosphere and was a lovely occasion for the students to wish people in our school community a very Happy Christmas! 😁🎄

November Wellbeing
The Wellbeing theme across the school for November is 'Keep Learning'. In sixth class we have been challenging ourselves to learn new things (see our Science Week Projects below) and take on puzzles such as class jigsaws. Here is our latest completed joint effort! Maith sibh! 👏
SCIENCE WEEK 2024
oUR HOME PROJECTS
For Science Week we set ourselves the task of designing and making a flying object. We thoroughly enjoyed this task - it was frustrating and fun in equal measure! 😁
We had to assess ourselves using the following criteria:
1. Is my design streamlined?
2. Did I test my design (considering distance, speed and height)?
3. Does it fly?
4. Did I change or alter my original design?
Take a look at our designs below...

We tested our designs under different conditions and for distance (paper aeroplanes), height (hot air balloon), flight (parachutes) and flapability (ornithopter)! 😁 They were all a great success, check out the pictures and videos below.
Distance heading east against the wind, Faye's paper aeroplane performed the best!

Distance indoors, Tommy's paper aeroplane performed the best!

Distance heading west with the wind, Luke's paper aeroplane performed the best!

We designed a presentation and shared all our learnings on aerodynamics and the history of aviation at Senior Assembly!
oUR SCHOOL PROJECTS
At school we worked in groups to create "Model Lungs!" All models were a success and we were able to inflate and deflate the lungs by inhaling and exhaling through the straws. We also labelled the different parts of the respiratory system. Check out our designs below!

Autumn walk with our buddies
We went on an autumn walk with our buddies. We collected leaves and objects of interest to us. We identified the names, leaves and fruits of five common trees on our walk. We made trays from clay using imprints from leaves we collected. Check out our beautiful autumn leave trays below.
GLOBE Air quality campaign 2024
Sixth Class have just kicked off the annual GLOBE Air Quality Campaign! We have completed the GLOBE Air Quality Survey over the past two years at our school. The experiment measures Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) levels at three different locations (Sheltered, Car Park and Near Main Road) on our school grounds. Nitrogen Dioxide is an air pollutant mainly associated with traffic.
This year we are again participating in the campaign to measure pollution levels in the air around our school. We had to place the test tubes at three different locations on our school grounds and will provide samples for analysis. The tubes will be in place for four weeks and we will take them down on October 23rd. We are looking forward to receiving feedback on our experiment and comparing the results to 2022 and 2023 to see if the air quality around our school is improving. 🤞 In addition this year, we are also required to conduct two traffic counts and weather observations each week! So if you see us out and about in the mornings with our clipboards, it is to collect data to help analyse and improve air quality at our school! 😁

After a month of monitoring the test tubes, completing traffic counts and recording weather observations, it was time to take our test tubes down on October 23rd. We returned them promptly and are looking forward to receiving the results soon.
A VERY Busy Start to 6th class!
We are enjoying our gymnastic lessons and getting outdoors for the last of the summer sunshine. We had a lot of work to do tending to the school garden after summer. We had to harvest carrots, turnips, onions, beetroot and potatoes. We took them home to sample them and they tasted delicious! Our pumpkins are still doing great! We look forward to working on the garden in the year ahead! 😁
😄 BUddy central!!! 😄
There was great excitement, laughter and fun when we had a long overdue catch up with our buddies after the summer break!
