Science Week 2020

This year Science week was running from November 9th to 15th. Each day we took part in some science experiments or virtual lessons. Have a look at some of the awesome activities we did!!!

Masks Investigation:

With COVID-19 currently still a force in our lives, Mr. O'Sullivan put a question to us to see if we can experiment to check just how useful/protective masks actually are? For this, Mr. O'Sullivan sought out some extra support and help from both Prof. Joseph Eustace (Director of the HRB of Ireland Clinical Research Facililty in UCC) and Prof. Luke O'Neill (Chair of Biochemistry & Prof. in  School of Biochemistry and Immunology in TCD).

Prof. Eustace agreed to zoom call our class on Friday 13th at 11:20am to hear our results of our experiment and talk to us about how we can continue to beat COVID-19. After a short introduction, he listened to each of our pods deliver their results from their experiments. He was very impressed with how we presented our findings and how we carried our a variety of different experiments. After this, Prof. Eustace spoke to us about how a virus can spread and how we can help beat diseases. He also took some excellent questions from our class and gave us back some very detailed and informative answers.

Prof. O'Neill emailed Mr. O'Sullivan the following message for us: ‘’Masks are so important as a weapon to use against the Coronavirus. If everyone wears on the risk of spreading the virus has been shown to decrease by 99%.  Testing how masks work tells us how important they are – best of luck with the experiments!’

We tested out our experiments on Thursday 12th. Mr. O'Sullivan gave us all (in our pods) the following equipment and left us to devise our own experiments.
- 5 masks
- 1 visor
- 1 piece of cloth
- 2 mirrors
- Spray bottle of water.

We all, in our pods, devised experiments to test how effective masks were when the bottle sprayed water (sneezing/coughing motion). We all came up with the following experiments:

1. Mask vrs masks
2. How effective is social distancing
3. Mask vrs no mask
4. no mask vrs no mask
5. How effective are visors
6. Sneezing/coughing from a height
7. And many more....

Some of our results were amazing!! As a class we have concluded from our investigations that:
1. Social Distancing is important to prevent catching the virus.
2. Masks are much more effective that visors
3. Sneezing/Coughing into your elbow will help stop the spread.

Prof. Eustace agreed with our conclusions and echoed that following ALL the public guidance will help us beat COVID. As a class we would like to thank Prof. Eustace very very much for zoom calling us and for taking the time to listen to us and give us such brilliant feedback!!

Have a look at some of the pictures of us working hard
!!

ESB - Static Electricity Experiment:

The ESB sent us some very good experiments to try out for science week. The first one we tried was the static electricity experiment. We were giving all the equipment in our pods by Mr. O'Sullivan. He let us experiment ourselves with trying to create static electricity before showing us the actual experiment below.

Surprising Science with Dr Matt Pritchard:

Over 2 days we watched this amazing virtual lesson with Dr. Matt Pritchard. His surprising science mixed with magical elements grabbed our attention from the first moment to the last. How about you try out some of these deadly experiments at home???

Here is an example of some of the amazing Halloween Art that we did!!

Maths Week 2020

For Maths Week 2020, we had daily puzzles in class and also took part in a maths trail with Ms. Hyne's 6th class. We had to create a maths trail for them while they created one for us. It was plenty of fun and the weather was thankfully on our side!!!

Space Week - Paper Mache Planets

For Space Week, we designed and made our own planets with Paper Mache. Mr. O'Sullivan gave us a balloon to paper mache over. Once we had done that, we were allowed design our planet in whatever way we wanted. Some planets are very realistic and similar to real planets. Other planets have a very VERY creative side to them.

The Industrial Revolution

In September, we were learning about the Industrial Revolution in History. The Industrial Revolution was a very significant time in our history so we decided to spend some time learning and devising projects. Have a look here at some of our projects:

Back to School

After the year of disruption last year, it's been fantastic to be back in the classroom once again. While there are many changes, social distancing, pods, extra hand washing etc, I must commend all the children in my 6th class for the huge efforts they have been putting in since day 1!!

Here is to a long and successful 6th class year :)
