We were all delighted to return to school after our summer holidays. We missed our friends and were excited to see them again. We began our year with some team art. For this activity, we started by painting simple circles in bright colours. Then, we moved places and added decoration to someone else's circle. We continued this until our sheet was full. Check out our finished masterpiece below!
Look at us practising our fine motor skills! Strong fine motor skills will help us to tie our coat, open our lunch boxes and to develop our cursive handwriting also.
Our first S.E.S.E topic of the year was 'All about me'. We created fact profiles to display in our classroom and we drew some impressive self portraits all by ourselves!
This month, we have been learning about autumn. We noticed that it's beginning to get colder now and that it gets darker earlier in the evening. We learned about how the animals are preparing themselves to go into hibernation and about why the leaves on the trees change colour. We created autumn trees in art depicting the beautiful red, yellow, orange and brown leaves. We read a lovely story called 'Don't Hog the Hedge'. It reminded us that it's always important to be kind and to share!
We also went on our nature walk to the Hugging Tree. On our walk, we were Autumn Detectives as we were trying to spot the signs of autumn around us. We used our senses to see what we could smell, hear, see and touch. We collected some autumn treasure - conkers, conker husks, berries & leaves. We even made a special wish at the Hugging Tree!
This month we were very lucky to welcome two gymnastics coaches to our school. They taught us lots of new skills like how to balance and how to do a forward roll. We were very excited to learn how to do a 'donkey kick' - look how high we can go!
The boys and girls had an exciting change this month as Ms. Murphy was with us on teaching practice for three weeks. Ms. Murphy taught us about our 2D shapes and she showed us how to do a 2D shape dance too, we loved this! Ms. Murphy set up lots of fun and exciting play stations each afternoon, this was the highlight of our day! We loved having Ms. Murphy in the classroom with us - thank you for all your hard work!
We enjoyed learning some new facts about the robin just in time for Christmas. We sequenced the life cycle of the robin and learned a new poem - 'Baby Robin'. Once we were familiar with the poem, we used our skill of visualisation and created a movie in our minds based on the poem. Then we used the words of the poem to create illustrations.
Ralph the Reindeer
We performed our Christmas play, Ralph the Reindeer, for our families. We worked very hard to learn our new songs, actions and lines. We were so glad that Rudolph and Ralph were able to save the day! Our families loved the show and Ms. Mc Grath was very proud of us!
Jambo! Hello! We have been busy learning all about Kenya this month in Senior Infants. Miss Mc Grath taught us lots of new facts and we spent some time exploring and discussing photographs and videos to compound our learning. We practised the skill of weaving using the colours of the Kenyan flag and we read about the Massai Mara Tribe. Do you like our traditional Massai necklaces? We also learned about the variety of animals that live in Kenya. Alex very kindly brought in his safari animals so that we could have a closer look. We had great fun learning a traditional Swahili song. Thanks again to all of the parents who sent in resources to support our learning!
In PE this month, we have been working hard to complete the Fit4Class athletics programme. Week by week, we have been building our level of fitness and also developing the skills of balance, co-ordination and agility. We have been really enjoying the variety of games and were delighted to receive a certificate at the end to celebrate our achievement!
We certainly have a few budding engineer's in Senior Infants after celebrating Engineer's Week 2019. We had a fun-filled week to say the least! We learned about the work of a Civil Engineer and a Pharmaceutical Engineer. We built towers, car parks and schools and even designed our own magic medicine based on an excerpt from George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. Ms. Feeney's class were busy making boats and very kindly invited us into their classroom to present their projects to us. We were very impressed!
The fun continued for Pancake Tuesday!
World Book Day took place on Thursday the 7th of March. We focused our learning this year on one of Ms. Mc Grath’s favourite books – Aliens love Underpants. The boys and girls really enjoyed the story and were giggling through retelling their favourite parts. Using the book as inspiration, we designed crazy aliens and made a careful checklist of all the items that our aliens might need in space. Later in the day, our buddies from 6th class came to our classroom. We read our favourite books from the library together and also completed some book reviews. We love when our buddies come to visit!
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day 2019, Senior Infants undertook a ‘Mile with a Smile’ Walk. We made sure to wear our bright and colourful tie dye socks for the occasion. Thanks to Mr. Forde’s class for their innovative design!
