Euro EDDIE Soccer blitz

Well done to the boys in 2nd class who took part and showed great team spirit in the Euro Eddie Soccer Blitz in Fermoy. Maith sibh buachaillí!

Active week

pLANTING UPDATE

Today we took home our marigold plants. They are now big enough to be planted into larger containers or window boxes. They grew very well on the sunny windows in our classroom and we made sure to give them plenty of water!

Today we had brilliant fun planting marigold seeds. We look forward to seeing how our plants grow and change over the coming weeks!

lá glas - great excitement at school for st. patrick's day!

2nd class taking part in the lá glas assembly for seachtain na gaeilge

Everyone in 2nd class joined up to perform a song and poem for Lá Glas. We also played a tune on the tin whistles which got a great reaction from our audience. Maith thú gach duine i ranga dó!

first confession celebrations

We celebrated our First Confession at the church on March 13th & 14th. We were very proud of ourselves. Afterwards we had a party and were thrilled to get party bags from the Parents Association. Well done to everyone!

Engineer's week

For Eingineer's week, we made marble mazes. First we planned out what the maze would look like. Next we built the maze using lots of recycled materials from home. Then we tested them and made improvements! Finally we invited our friends from the other classes to see them. We really enjoyed taking part in Engineer's Week!

irish sign lANGUAGE

For Assembly we presented about Irish Sign Language. Classes from 1st - 4th are being taught sign language by Eimear, an Irish Sign Language Tutor. We have learned the alphabet and signs for some words. In class we did our own research about sign language and created posters to hang around the school to encourage everyone to use sign, which we shared about at assembly.

ELF TRAINING DAY

Elf Training Day was a great day in 2nd class. We had loads of fun developing our musical, fitness, culinary and artistic skills throughout the day. We even learned some Elfish! We were delighted to receive our Honorary Elf Graduation Certificates at the end of the day.

Researching about germany on the chromebooks

We enjoyed using the Chromebooks to research facts about Germany.

SCIENCE - lemon volcanoes!

This week in Science we learned what a chemical reaction is? We added bread soda, a base, to a cut lemon, which is acidic. The acid and the base reacted causing lots of foam and fizz to form as carbon dioxide was released. We also added vinegar and a few drops of food colouring for extra fizz. Thankfully our predictions at the beginning didn't play out and there were no explosions!!

science week

During Science Week we learned all about floating and sinking. In History we read the story about The Titanic. We did experiments to understand how floating and sinking works and we built rafts. We had a great week!

DESIGN AND MAKE
We had fun designing and building rafts made of lollipop sticks! 

WHAT MATERIALS FLOAT BEST?
We learned that objects that are more dense than water sink and objects less dense  than water float!​

FLOATING ORANGE EXPERIMENT
We were surprised when the orange floated with its peel on but sank with its peel off! We discovered orange peel is full of tiny pockets of air which give it buoyancy.

gymnastics

We learned lots of new skills in Gymnastics. 

SPHE

​In SPHE we focused on Healthy Eating for the month of October. We learned all about the food pyramid. We talked about the foods our bodies need to stay healthy and strong and what foods we should eat occasionally and in small amounts such as treats. We concluded that we should always try to eat some rainbow foods, such as fruit and vegetables, at all mealtimes. 

space week

We really enjoyed Space Week. We learned about night and day, the first moon landing and the Solar System. We constructed very cool solar systems using polystyrene balls, paint and barbeque sticks! We showed fantastic teamworking skills during this project.

 We are learning about rounding in Maths.
Remember 1 through 4, touch the floor! 5-9 climb the vine!

art - marbling

In English we have been reading the story To The Art Exhibition which inspired us to do some marbling using ink paints and water. We were amazed with the cool patterns we created!

nature walk

2nd class went on a nature walk together. We did some bark rubbings and collected lots of leaves. On our return to class we did leaf rubbings and identified what trees the leaves came from.

In PE we were focusing on the Fundamental Movement Skill, walking and working on our cooperative games skills! We have also started swimming on Tuesdays and we are super excited to begin Gymnastics in October!

During our first week back to school we spent lots of time talking about what a happy classroom looks like and how we can learn best at school. We spent time brainstorming class rules and also learned about our school's Golden Rules.
