We hope you enjoy seeing what we have been learning in school 😊

April

Happy Easter from Ms. Murphy's wonderful Junior Infants 😊

March

Engineers Week

For Engineers Week we had 4 stations and each group tried a different station each day. Our stations were: 1. Design a way for the Gingerbread Man to cross the river. 2. Design a way for Rapunzel to escape from her tower. 3. Construction station. 4. Working on Maths and designing Lego trains on the iPads. On the last day of our stations we were delighted that our buddies from 5th Class came to work with us. You can see some of our wonderful work below. We definitely have lots of budding engineers in Junior Infants!

Spring Walk

We had beautiful weather for our Spring walk. We spotted lots of signs of spring and we kept up our tradition of stopping at the Hugging Tree to make some wishes!

Lá Glas

To celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge and St. Patrick's Day we had a Lá Glas and sang 2 Irish songs at our school assembly. You will find one of our Irish songs below. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Science

In Science we have been learning about how we can keep ourselves healthy. We learned that we can take care of ourselves by eating a balanced diet, exercising, having good personal hygiene, dressing appropriately for the weather, talking about our feelings and getting enough rest and sleep. In class we tasted pears, peppers, cucumbers, nectarines, tomatoes and watermelon. Watermelon was the clear favourite in our class as you can see from the graph below.

World Book Day

We dressed up as our favourite characters and as it was also Seachtain na Gaeilge we introduced ourselves in Irish and spoke in Irish about the clothes we were wearing!
We also got to spend some time reading with our buddies from 5th Class. This was one of the highlights of our day 😊
We also completed a book Scavenger Hunt the next day!

Pancake Tuesday

On Pancake Tuesday we made pancakes in school.
We added our ingredients to the bowl...
                                       ... mixed the ingredients
together to make the batter ...
... and then thoroughly enjoyed eating the finished product! 😊

Data

In Maths we have been learning about Data. We created our own graphs using hands on materials and we also created graphs together on the interacive whiteboard.

January/February

Irish

In Irish we have been learning about éadaí (clothes). We have been having conversations in Irish with our partners, using our picture cards to help us.

Crazy Hair Day

The Student Council organised a Crazy Hair Day and it was so much fun!

Geography

In Geography we explored our school yard/playground and talked about all the different places we like to play. We used our Lego and blocks to create new pieces of equipment we would like to see in our school yard/playground. We came up with wonderful ideas and creations!

Science

In Science we carried out an experiment to find the hottest place in our classroom. We placed ice cubes in 3 different locations in our room (on the worktop, by the whiteboard and on the radiator) and we checked the ice cubes every 5 minutes. The ice cubes on the radiator melted quickest. This let us know that the radiator was the hottest place in our room.

Maths

We have now learned the numbers 1-5 and so we went on a number hunt around the school to see if we could find any of our numbers!
December

Christmas holidays

On the day of the Christmas holidays we enjoyed some hot chocolate and marshmallows and some Christmas yoga too!
Our special Christmas cards
We continued with the topic of writing to socialise and combined it with Art to make very special Christmas cards for our families. We even wrote our messages inside using the letters we now know how to write in cursive writing. With great excitement we then went to the post office to buy our stamps and posted our cards to our families.
Role Play
Our theme in English for this month was Santa's workshop. We set up our very own Santa's workshop in our classroom and we had a design station, an assembly station, a quality check station and a wrapping station. We had lots of busy elves getting ready for Christmas in our workshop!
Our theme in English last month was 'The Hospital' and so at the start of this month we set up a hospital in our class room so we could role-play being at the hospital. We had some very efficient doctors, nurses, x-ray technicians, receptionists and chefs in our class hospital! Even Buddy our class elf got involved! Our theme in English last month was 'The Hospital' and so at the start of this month we set up a hospital in our class room so we could role-play being at the hospital. Winter Walk
We went on our winter walk to look for signs of winter.
Show and Tell
In History we have been learning about toys. We discussed toys that are suitable for babies and toys that are suitable for children our age and the differences between them. We then brought in our favourite toys to show the class (as well as some toys from when we were babies) and we sat in Ms. Murphy's chair to tell our class all about them. We really enjoyed seeing and hearing about all the different toys.
Post for Ms. Murphy's Junior Infants!
Last month we found out that Ella (the character in our English story) broke her leg. Ms. Murphy knows Ella's teacher and so we made and wrote Get Well Soon cards for Ella and posted them to Ella's teacher. We couldn't believe it when post arrived to the school for everyone in our class. We were so excited when we realised Ella had sent a Thank You card to everyone in the class!

November
Visit from the Heritage Council
We were very lucky to receive a visit from the Heritage Council. We found out about some of the birds that can be found in Ireland, we learned how to draw a bird and we even got to see and touch a bird's nest and some birds too.
Yoga
On one of our P.E. days this month it was raining so we decided to do some yoga inside instead! We tried some "On the Farm" yoga from Cosmic Kids. You can find the video below if you'd like to try it at home.
Taste Test
In SPHE we explored our sense of taste. We tasted food that was bitter, sour, salty and sweet. The salty and the sweet foods were clear winners in our class!!! There were great reactions to the different tastes as can be seen in the slideshow below.
Light
In Science we have been learning about colours. We went on a colour hunt around the school and then we experimented with paint to create different shades of colours, using white paint to make our shades lighter. We also ordered shades of yellow, red, green and blue from darkest to lightest.
Houses
In SESE this month we have been learning about houses. In History we listened to the story of The Three Little Pigs. We decided to build houses out of straw, sticks and bricks for our 'pigs' (teddy bears) and see if the 'wolf' (Ms. Murphy's hairdryer!!!) could blow them down. We had so much fun!
In Geography we talked about the different rooms that can be found in houses and some furniture that can be found in each of these rooms. We worked together in small groups to design different rooms and then we put the rooms together to create a display for our classroom.
Science Week
We really enjoyed Science Week!
Exploring the effect of heating and cooling on chocolate by making Rice Krispie cakes was one of our favourite activities from Science Week!
Blending
We have been very excited in Junior Infants as we are now able to read words! We have been learning to blend our first group of sounds in class and we have been learning to read high frequency words too. We are doing great and Ms. Murphy is very proud of us 😊 You will find some blending videos below.
How full is your bucket?
In class we have been talking about showing love and kindness to others. We read the story "How Full Is Your Bucket?". You can watch the story below. We are all "Bucket Fillers" in Junior Infants and we will continue to complete acts of kindness in school and at home 😊

October
Halloween
It was lots of fun coming to school in our costumes!
Ipads
There was great excitement when we used the school iPads for the first time! We used them to work on patterns, puzzles and our sounds. Look at the concentration on our faces! Below you will find the games we played if you would like to try them at home. Just click on the image of the game to try that game.

Leaf Lanterns
We used the leaves we collected on our nature walk to make leaf lanterns.
Autumn Walk
After many wet days we were finally able to go on our nature walk to look for signs of autumn. On our walk we saw many signs of autumn. We saw dew, conkers, fallen leaves, helicopter seeds and spider webs! On our nature walk we also visited the magical Hugging Tree. Legend has it that the Hugging Tree can grant wishes if you give it a hug so we all gave the Hugging Tree a hug and made a wish. We had a great time exploring autumn on our nature walk and our bags were full by the time we returned to school! Back in class we explored what we had in our bags and we discovered we had found horse chestnut, sycamore, beech and oak leaves as well as conkers and their husks, beech nuts and their cupules and sycamore seedlings (helicopters). We could see some conkers that were almost ready to come out of their husks and we had some beech nuts almost ready to come out of their cupules too. We made our sycamore seedlings (helicopters) spin and we enjoyed looking at our collections through our magnifying glasses so that we could see them in better detail!
As part of our work on autumn we also learned about the hedgehog. We looked at a photo and video of a hedgehog Ms. Murphy found outside her house, we used clay and matchsticks to make hedgehogs and we created beautiful hedgehog prints using autumn colours.
Maths
In Maths we have been learning about pattern. We made patterns using our concrete materials and we even created some pattern art.
Space Week
For Space Week we learned about the sun, the moon, the stars and planet Earth. We watched some videos from astronaut Chris Hadfield showing us how people sleep, eat and brush their teeth in space. We also learned about Neil Armstrong and watched a video of him walking on the moon. We created pictures of ourselves as astronauts in space, we made our very own rockets and after listening to the story 'Aliens Love Underpants' we made aliens out of clay! We really enjoyed Space Week!
P.E.
In P.E. we have been working on our throwing and catching skills. We have been working on throwing our beanbags and catching them again. We even tried to fit in a clap or an action after throwing our beanbag before we caught it again! We have also been working on throwing to a target as well as throwing and catching with a partner.
