Welcome to Miss Murphy's First Class!
Dia dhaoibh a cháirde! Welcome to Miss Murphy's First Class. We are excited to show you a few of our favourite activities and topics that we have completed throughout the year in First Class. We hope you enjoy our stories and photographs along the way!
June
Active Schools week
Active Schools Week will be held from Monday 5th until Friday 9th June 2023!
May
The Month of Mary
We have been looking forward to the month of May, the month of Mary.
April
April showers bring may flowers!
We were very excited to create our art work to show how April showers are coming but will bring about the wonderful summer weather ahead! The children used lots of colours and utilised their cutting skills to cut out the raindrops falling around their umbrellas. Children also designed their own bees and butterflies and we displayed them all around our umbrellas!
Cáisc shona Daoibh!
We would like to wish everybody a Happy Easter! We have had a very busy March and have really enjoyed collecting Easter eggs, celebrating Seachtain na Gaeilge and singing songs with our friends for St. Patrick's Day! We have also really enjoyed our Picker Pals litter-picking fun and exciting challenges. Cáisc Shona Daoibh a cháirde!
Picker pals!
Miss Murphy's First Class have really enjoyed the Picker Pals programme. Each child has had the opportunity to take the 'Picker Pack' home and pick up the litter around the Rathcormac village to help keep our village clean and tidy. Here a few photographs below to show all the children enjoying the litter picking challenge!
March
St. Mothers day
We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Mothers Day in First Class. We designed flowers in a vase and wrote heartful messages to our mothers and grandmothers.
Spring
Our Spring portraits
We have been learning about the season of spring in Art and we painted pictures of a scene in Spring. The children included sheep, cattle and flowers in the fields. Let’s hope the sun starts to stay out so that we can look forward to our Spring walk!
Step into spring challenge
The children in First Class really enjoyed the Step Into Spring Walking Challenge.
We walked a total of 15 km throughout the month of March and are very proud of our Spring walks. Each of our walks were recorded and we tracked our distances on the Nike Run app. We completed around 1 km every few days. Each child received their Step into Spring certificates. We are so grateful to have been part of the challenge as the children absolutely loved going on their walk every day.

Seachtain na gaeilge
Labhair Gaeilge linn!
As well as Engineers’ Week and World Book Day, March has also been a very busy month. We loved Seachtain na Gaeilge. Thaitin sé go mór linn! Bhí spórt agus spraoi againn! We began each day with a new Irish phrase. We played lots of Irish games and performed an Irish play called "Chuaigh mé go dtí an siopa" in groups in front of the class. First Class students sang the song “An Luascan” and recited the poem entitled “An tSeamróg” at the Assembly. We really enjoyed our Lá Glas!
Gaeilgeoir na seachtaine!
Miss Murphy is still so thrilled with our progress in Gaeilge. Have a look below at the photographs of all children who were chosen as "Gaeilgeoir na Seachtaine" for their super efforts in Gaeilge over the past few weeks. We really enjoyed performing our lovely Irish poems and songs. We learned all about the weather in Irish and some of us even had the confidence to present "The Weather" in Irish.
Lá Glas
Lá Glas encouraged all students to dress up in green to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and of course, to celebrate our Bride Rovers colours!
Engineers Week
For Engineers Week, the children designed their very own STEM projects. The children were asked to design their own ship or boat to help them sail their way through First Class! The children came up with amazingly creative ideas for their boat and it is most evident that Ms. Murphy's First Class students have been active engineers and explorers! Have a look at some of the brilliant ideas the boys and girls came up with below.
Literacy
My Spring Garden
To celebrate Spring and new beginnings, the children planned, prepared and eventually wrote their own poems about what happens during Spring. The children enjoyed learning how to rhyme certain words and our class discussions about spring helped the children to use their imagination and broaden their vocabulary.
Irish sign language
First Class students completed eight ISL (Irish Sign Language) sessions before the Easter break. The children loved learning all the letters, numbers and colours in ISL. They also loved having conversations in ISL!
February
World Book week
In First Class, we love reading so much we spent all week celebrating World Book Day!
On Monday, we sat around the 'campfire' and enjoyed some campfire reading. We read the book 'Monkey Puzzle' together and then, children enjoyed reading independently.

WORLD BOOK Day
During World Book Day, we also designed the front cover of our favourite books. Some books included 'The BFG' by Roald Dahl and 'The Gruffalo' by Julia Donaldson. Children also drew a self-portrait of how they celebrated World Book Week. On Friday, our school also took on the challenge of 'One Book, One School, One Day'. The aim was to pass one book ('The Vanishing Lake') from classroom to classroom and have it read in all classrooms before the end of the day. We are delighted to say we succeeded in completing the challenge!
Whole School reading!

Pancake Tuesday
We really enjoyed making (and eating!) our pancakes on Pancake Tuesday!
Bake sale
Fifth and Sixth Class organised a cake sale to raise funds for the people of Turkey and Syria affected by the the recent earthquakes. First Class students really enjoyed admiring all the different types of delicious cakes! Of course, the children chose their own piece of cake (or two) to eat. It was a great day and well done to everybody for all their efforts!
Valentines Day
Miss Murphy's First Class have been busy learning a Japanese paper technique called Notan, and having fun with print making to create these gorgeous pieces of art just in time for Valentine’s Day. I think you will agree that they turned out beautifully!
Showing our emotions!
We have been working on trying to identify our emotions and feelings. I allowed all the children to express their feelings in one picture. The children were asked to show a facial expression of how they were feeling on a particular day. As you can see, the children are happy and excited!
St. Brigid's day
We loved learning our new song 'We Sing a Song to Brigid'. We also drew and coloured a picture of St. Brigid and her cloak. The children loved learning all about the life of St. Brigid and how she is the patron saint of healing, poetry and learning.
January
We love handwriting!
First Class have really enjoyed practicing their cursive handwriting. From January until the end of the year, the children have been learning how to join the letters using capital letters and full stops. Each child love their handwriting time in the afternoon and are really proud of their work!
Our trip to the post office
We made special appreciation cards for our grandparents and then we went to the post office to post them. Inside each card was a poem about how we all love our grandparents.
Grandparents day
On Wednesday 25th January, we celebrated Grandparents Day in Scoil Bhríde. First Class composed some amazing acrostic poems. The children also completed a fact-file about their grandparent and even interviewed their grandparents about what life was like when they went to primary school.
P.E.
In P.E. this month, we have been practicing our dribbling, blocking, kicking and passing the ball. We have also been practicing our under-arm and over-arm throwing using beanbags.
Mental maths
We love doing our Mental Maths practice every morning. We like to do a quick ten-minute mental maths before we start our Maths groups. Children have been really enjoying the groups as they play Maths games, use their whiteboards and engage in a hands-on experience in Maths.
SESE
In SESE, we have been learning about the season of winter and in Art we created paintings comparing autumn trees and winter trees. We also designed some winter clothes!
December
Daithí's project on Dinasaurs!
Daithí designed his own project all about dinosaurs. With the help of Ms. Quirke and Ms. O' Shea, Daithí wrote a fact-file on a T-rex and recorded his own video all about the different types of dinosaurs. Daithí showed his video to everyone in the class on the day of our Christmas holidays. We were so impressed by your project Daithí!
Christmas in Rang a haon!
Our First Class Christmas show!
December brought great excitement to our classroom as we began preparing for Christmas. We produced festive Art work and learned new songs, dance moves and lines for our very own "First Class Christmas Show". Here are some photographs of our lead up to Christmas. We designed our own Angel Gabriel decorations for our Christmas Tree to remember the birth of Jesus.
Winter wonderland!
We loved making our very own snowmen for our Winter Wonderland display. Here are a few photographs of the children making the snowmen for our season of winter.
November
Science week
We loved doing experiments in the classroom and outside on the yard. During Science Week 2023, we carried out different experiments every day.
We learned about low sounds and high sounds using a spoon and glasses filled with water and without water. We also found out how a balloon can get stuck to a woolly jumper over time due to static electricity.
As we love listening to music during Art or Meditation time, we designed our very own Bluetooth speaker! We put together our own from paper cups and toilet paper rolls. Is aoibhinn linn ag éisteacht le ceol!

October
Halloween!
We had lots of fun celebrating "Halloween" together. On the lead up to the Mid-Term Break, we completed various tasks and activities based on the theme of "Halloween."
We learned about Halloween Traditions in History and created an Art piece called "Ghost At The Window." At the Art Station, we created magic potions and invented magic spells. With one little sip of a certain magic potion, students were able to fly with speed around the classroom!
On Friday 28th of October, we dressed up in spooooky costumes. We went on a “Witch & Wizard Walk” around the school to show off our impressive costumes. We learned Halloween songs called “The Boogie Woogie Pumpkin Man” and “Winnie the Witch.” We also learned a poem called "Knocking On My Door." Happy Halloween!

September
First Class begins!
We spent the beginning of the school year getting to know each other and enjoying being reunited with close friends from Senior Infants and former friends from Junior Infants.
We enjoyed Play Time together and a nice visit to the School Garden while getting to know each other. During the first week of school, we learned our new song called "Sky Full of Stars."
We created an Art Display outside our classroom. We made our own hot air balloons to show that we are soaring to great heights in First Class. We learned a poem called "Climb Aboard the Spaceship." We also created a Class Tree to show unity as a new class.

Golden time
Golden Time is awarded to the children on Fridays once they have all reached to 20 dojo points each! They have been loving our Golden Time playing games and playing with toys in the classroom.
