Engineers Week

On Wednesday 9th March, we were so lucky to have a zoom call with Michael from Designer Minds which was sponsored by Johnson and Johnson. We learned about the various types of engineers before becoming engineers ourselves. We had to design a zipline using various recycled items we found at home. We then went one step further by making a zipline with a slope!! We came up with some wonderful creations, don't you think?

Budding Engineers!

The children were learning about sustainability in urban areas last week. As part of this the children learned about the engineering design process. We decided to put it to the test by designing something that we would love in the park. The children were put in groups and they discussed together what they would like. They then decided on materials they would use to make their models. The children had to use some problem solving during their constructions just like engineers on a daily basis. Their final creations turned out amazingly!

Litter Clean Up in Rathcormac!

We have been learning a lot about the recycling and taking care of our environment over the past few weeks. We decided to help our community by doing a litter clean up around the new park. The children were so proud of themselves after completing the wonderful deed. Maith sibh Rang a trí!

Science Week 8-12th November

We had so much fun today, when Emer from Bricks 4 Kidz came to visit us. She gave us the challenge to become engineers and problem solvers. We had to make a speed bot. We all worked so well on building our speed bots! Then the fun began when we got to race our speed bots against each other.

Some of our work from November
This month, we have been learning about rivers. We decided to learn about our local river, The River Blackwater in Geography. We learned so much about it. we learned that the source of the river is in Co. Kerry and the mouth of the river is in Youghal. We learned various towns it passes through as well as some of its tributaries. One of these tributaries is right here on our doorstep in Rathcormac, The River Bride. We enjoyed putting all this knowledge to paper by drawing a map of the River Blackwater from the source to the mouth.

Some of our displays from October

Space Week
The children had great week over space week. The children learned about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landing on the moon in English. They looked at the Space Race and filled in a timeline of the events in History. The children learned about the sun and the planets.
The children learned the correct order of the planets from the sun. They made their own solar system by placing the planets in the correct order.

They were also extremely lucky to have their first workshop from Bricks4kidz this month. They had so much fun and can't wait for them to return to do the 2nd session in November!
We became astronauts!

Trail of Rathcormac
Picture
We have been learning a lot about the different types of houses and various fauna and flora in our environment. We took a stroll around Rathcormac to find evidence of all that we had learned throughout the few weeks.
Music- Our Favourite Things
We learned the song 'My favourite things' from the Sound of Music. We then decided to become creative and write our own lyrics to the song by putting in our favourite things.

We learned how to draw self portraits taking particular attention to the eyes, mouth and nose and how to form these properly. We have some budding artists in 3rd Class don't you think!?
In Gaeilge, we have been covering the area of Mé Féin. We are very good at talking about ourselves and we wrote all that we learned in a letter as Gaeilge!! Maith sibh!!
