GLOBE PROJECT: "HOW COOL IS YOUR SCHOOL?"
After a month long measuring, observing and recording temperatures across five different surfaces on our school site, it was finally time to present our findings via zoom to seven other schools in Ireland and the experts from An Taisce! The project aims to work with schools across Ireland and the globe to identify risk areas and help provide solutions to future proof our schools against increasing temperatures and heatwaves. We also got to review the results from schools in Malta and Israel who were conducting the experiment at the the same time as Ireland for comparison purposes. It was fascinating!!! A school in Israel recorded a temperature of 51°C on one of their surfaces!!! Our highest was 15.5°C!!! This project also helped us to really understand why we are often referred to as The Emerald Isle. The schools abroad were in very built up environments and even a desert with little to no natural green in their surrounding environments, and where there was green it was astroturf! This made us really grateful for our natural environment here in Ireland.
A special Well Done and Comhgairdeas to Josh Carroll, Hannah O'Driscoll, Louise Finn and Eoghan Devereaux who did an outstanding job presenting our findings on the day and to Lisa Lewis who worked so hard with the team to prepare and polish the presentation below. 👏👏👏👏👏
We have made many suggestions on how to improve our school now and into the future to our principal Mrs. Howard initially. She has kindly agreed to work with us to plant two broad leaved trees in November which will be known as the GLOBE Trees. Keep an eye here for more Cool School ideas!

future project: 3d printing
We are very busy with 3D Printing in class at the moment. We have been learning all about how 3D printing is an additive manufacturing process (start with nothing but material and build up from there) versus the traditional subtractive process (start with a stone / block of wood and chip away to create the product). We had to design our key links on a software programme like CAD (Computer Aided Design) and print them in class below. More details to follow, check back soon for updates. 😁

ENGINEERS WEEK 2023
DESIGN A PROSTHESIS
For Engineers Week we set ourselves the task of designing and making a prosthesis for our toys. We thoroughly enjoyed this task - it was challenging and funny in equal measure! 😁 The feedback was unanimous, everybody had great fun doing it.
We had to assess ourselves using the following criteria:
1. Does the prosthesis fit?
2. Do you think it feels comfortable for your toy?
3. Does it improve mobility (movement) for the user (toy)?
4. Is it suitable e.g. is it balanced?
Take a look at our designs below...

OUR GLOBE PROJECTS - SPRING WATCH & SURFACE TEMPERatures
Spring watch green up campaign
Trees are beautiful when they wake up each spring. We are observing our Oak tree on the school grounds from buds to leaves and sharing our measurements in the GLOBE database. We are also exploring how important the role of trees are in the carbon cycle and cooling our cities and urban areas.
We are excited to observe the "green up" changes on our Oak tree at the front of out school. We predicted that the bud burst will take place after Easter on buds 2 - 4 and possibly over Easter on bud 1 as this one is already swelling!
SURface temperature
The purpose of this investigation is to discover how the land cover of the ground affects its surface temperature. The main research question is, "How does surface cover affect surface temperature?" We set up research studies at sites on our school - astroturf, bare soil, grass, tarmac and concrete. We are busy taking measurements on five assigned dates in March across five different surface types to compare with schools in Ireland, Malta and Israel. We will be learning about cooling solutions for our school to tie in with our school garden.
World book day
We loved dressing up as our favourite characters and sharing our favourite books with our friends and buddies at school. Some of us were even inspired by our fellow school mates! Check out our fabulous costumes below.

GLOBE Clean Air Survey Results
We completed the GLOBE Clean Air Survey at our school in October 2022. The experiment measured Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) levels at three different locations (Sheltered, Car Park and Near Main Road) on our school grounds. Nitrogen Dioxide is an air pollutant mainly associated with traffic.
We were delighted to discover that we fell within the low range for all three readings.
See our poster below which we submitted to Globe and our presentation that we presented at assembly.

Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland (AADI)
Clíona and Hannah are raising money for Autism Awareness Dogs Ireland (AADI). They are running 50 miles in January to raise money for this very worthy charity. AADI is a charity for kids with autism to be gifted the chance of having a better life. Dogs go through a training programme and can open up a whole new world of opportunity and possibility for children with autism and their families.
Clíona's puppy Harper had her first day at school. She attended assembly and was so well behaved and so loved by all the children and teachers! 🥰

Grandparents Day 2023
We interviewed our grandparents from around the world (India, UK and USA) and the four corners of Ireland for this special occasion. We compared our favourite things from past and present to find out what is different from our grandparents time and what if anything is the same! The results from our interviews will be announced in our upcoming school podcast!
We also made cards for Grandparents Day. Check them out below! 😊
PE - Games
We are learning the rules of unihoc in PE. We have been practicing stop and block, controlling the ball and shooting at a target.

Christmas Baking
We baked biscuits for Christmas - they were a mixture of plain and cinnamon flavoured. Many of us are now converted cinnamon fans! They were so delicious that many did not survive until home time! Take a look at us baking up a storm below. The quick and easy recipe is also below to try at home!
Buddy Activities this month
Christmas preparations are well underway with our buddies in Ms. Murphy's class. We made and painted clay Christmas tree decorations. It was all hands on deck, including Sheila. 😁

Science Week 2022
We had a very busy Science Week!!! We participated in the Designer Minds "Introduction to Computer Science Workshop" sponsored by Johnson & Johnson. The students were thrilled with the workshop delivered by Michael at Designer Minds and proved they were very capable by designing, creating and coding an interactive game in their very first session! We are looking forward to continuing our work on Scratch this year and have even set up our own accounts and online class already so we can share our designs and learn from each other.
Our Science Week Home Projects
For Science Week we set ourselves the task of designing and making a flying object. We thoroughly enjoyed this task - it was frustrating and fun in equal measure! 😁
We had to assess ourselves using the following criteria:
1. Is my design streamlined?
2. Did I test my design (considering distance, speed and height)?
3. Does it fly?
4. Did I change or alter my original design?

Getting muddy in the School Garden! 😁
After the recent spell of wet weather, we finally found a dry day to tend to the school garden. We harvested kale, cabbage and parsnips and brought them home. We used them in a variety of ways - we made soup, had salads and we have some well fed pets also. We are also bringing the classroom indoors and are drying out sunflower seeds to plant next year, as well as poppy stems for decoration.
We are looking forward to a fun year ahead learning and working in the school garden.

SESE - The Globe Clean Air Quality Survey
We participated in the Globe Clean Air quality survey to measure pollution levels in the air around our school. We had to place the test tubes in three different locations on our school grounds and provide samples for analysis. The tubes were in place for four weeks and we took them down on October 26th. We are looking forward to receiving feedback on our experiment. We completed a presentation on our work over the last month below.
Buddy Reading
We met up with our buddies in Ms. Murphy's Junior Infants and had a lovely time reading stories to them.
Our Autumn Walk
We went on an autumn walk and collected leaves and objects of interest to us. We identified the names, leaves and fruits of five common trees on our walk. We made trays from clay using imprints from leaves we collected. Check out our beautiful autumn leave trays below.
Gaeilge
Ghlacamar páirt sa Fhéile na Gaeilge le rang 5 agus rang 6. Bhaineamar an-sult as! Bhíomar ag caint ar an dtéama "Mé Féin" agus d'imríomar cluichí cosúil le Biongó freisin.
We took part in Féile Gaeilge with 5th and 6th classes. We really enjoyed it. We spoke about the topic "Myself" and we played games such as Bingo also.
Scríobhamar scéalta leis an teideal "An Ollphéist ar Scoil" le haghaigh Oíche Shamhna. Bhí siad greannmhar ar fad, mar shampla d'ith ollphéist amháin an mhúinteoir!
We wrote stories with the title "The Monster at School" for Halloween. They were very funny, one monster even ate the teacher!
